Essential Travel Apps

Sometimes I think about the lives of explorers hundreds of years ago. How in the world did Mansa Musa find Turkey without Google Maps? Sacagawea deserves all the accolades for being able to navigate the Northern Pacific without Waze or Rome2Rio.

Nowadays, technology has made travel a lot easier. Here are some of my favorite apps that help to make travel less stressful & leave me with more time to explore.

Google Translate: A Great Travel App

First is Google Translate. Google translate is a must-have when visiting countries with a different native language than you. I’ll never forget getting off the wrong bus stop in Dakar in the middle of the night. I was lost and had difficulty finding someone who could understand me. If I had downloaded google translate, it would have been much easier to get help.

Google translate has many excellent features, including Talk to Translate, which translates a speaker without typing, and Scan-To Translate, which automatically translates text from a photo. So now you can take a photo of a menu in French, and then Google translate will translate the menu for you into whichever language you prefer.

2. WhatsApp

Secondly is WhatsApp. WhatsApp is perfect for staying in contact with loved ones or new friends without data. All you need is wifi. To set up WhatsApp, you have to verify your phone number, so it is crucial that you download and verify the app before getting to your destination.

3. Currency Converter App: Essential Travel App

The Currency Converter app is a must if you don’t want to get scammed when exchanging money. Moreover, this app can convert currency without wifi. As a result, you’ll be able to convert your money no matter where you are.

4.  Viator Travel App

Viator is a fantastic resource for booking excursions and activities. Sometimes, popular excursions sell out early. Sometimes, it is cheaper to buy in person. It’s best to do your research before purchasing. As someone who hates back-to-back excursions, I don’t suggest booking an excursion every day. Instead, leave a few free days.

5. SkyScanner Travel App

If you love a good deal and are flexible with your dates, SkyScanner is excellent. You can plug in a date and set your location as “Everywhere” to see travel deals that fit your schedule. Truly a great app for travelers who love a good deal.

6. Hopper Travel App

The great thing about Hopper is that it helps you track the prices of particular destinations and alerts you when prices are at their lowest. Lots of people love Hopper because its algorithm is pretty reliable. Furthermore, it has a great feature that allows you to freeze the price of flights for a limited amount of time.

7. Rome2Rio Travel App

So imagine that you’re in Rome, but you’re trying to get to Lake Como, and you have no idea how to do so. Rome2Rio is the app for you. It gives you various ways to get from A to B by train, bus, car, or plane. Lastly, this app is perfect if you’re a backpacker or prefer public transportation.
